PEOPLE MAGAZINE'S
SEXIEST MEN

EXAMINING THE MOVIES MADE BY AMERICA'S HEARTTHROBS,
BEFORE AND AFTER CROWNING OF THE FAMED TITLE

BY AMY LANZA

Each year, People Magazine grants one lucky heartthrob the title of Sexiest Man by surveying magazine readers to see "which sexy men are getting [them] worked up".  While the list ranges from Hollywood movie stars to a British soccer player, all have made an appearance in at least one full length feature film.  What effect does being crowned "Sexiest Man" have on their film career?  Does it hurtle them into the spotlight?  Diminish their legitimacy as respectable actors?

For each sexy man, I compiled a list of their films, the year in which the film was released, the film's critic rating on the popular rating website Rotten Tomatoes, and the total gross domestic box office for each film from Box Office Mojo.  Each actor's timeline is different, depending on when their movies were made (i.e. Chris Hemsworth was not even alive when Sean Connery starred in Goldfinger.).  Film rating and box office are used as a proxy for "success" in the industry, and box office is denoted as size of each film's dot:

Smaller to larger earnings in US dollars

The gold trophy on each chart marks the year in which the celebrity received the designation of Sexiest Man, and the number to the right of the chart symbolizes the change in the celebrity's average movie rating before being crowned Sexiest Man and after being Sexiest Man.  For example, -3.25 means the celebrity's average movie rating after being crowned is 3.25 percent LOWER than the celebrity's average movie rating before being crowned.

Before and after becoming a Sexy Man

Overall, FIFTY SIX PERCENT of celebrities named Sexy Man saw a drop in their film ratings after the fact.  Is being sexy worth the potential damage it can do to one's career?

● ● ●

Mel Gibson  1985

Mark Harmon  1986

Mark Harmon's drop of 39.6 percentage points is the largest in the group.  Probably a good thing he stuck to NCIS.

Harry Hamlin  1987

John F Kennedy, Jr  1988

Unfortunately, John-John's only movie was not rated by critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The president's son made a cameo appearance in A Matter of Degrees (1991) as a guitar playing Romeo.

Sean Connery  1989

Tom Cruise  1990

Patrick Swayze  1991

Swayze couldn't maintain the Dirty Dancing heat, even with a Havana-themed sequel in 2004 that flopped at 22%.

Nick Nolte  1992

Richard Gere  1993

For 1994, no award given.

Brad Pitt  1995 / 2000

Denzel Washington  1996

George Clooney  1997 / 2006

Harrison Ford  1998

Known for his roles in Indiana Jones and Star Wars, Harrison Ford's top-rated films clustered in the beginning of his career.
An exception is the highest grossing movie of all the Sexiest Men.  Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) brought in $936,662,225.

For 1999, see: Richard Gere

For 2000, see: Brad Pitt

Pierce Brosnan  2001

Ben Affleck  2002

Johnny Depp  2003 / 2009

Johnny Depp's role as Captain Jack Sparrow was pretty successful in 2003 (79%), but the Captain's ratings for the Pirates empire have slowly dropped off ever since (2006: 54%, 2007: 45%, 2011: 32%).  Depp has been more successful playing whimsical - almost maniacal - roles such as Willy Wonka and the Mad Hatter.

Jude Law  2004

Matthew McConaughey  2005

For 2006, see: George Clooney

Matt Damon  2007

Matt is the only "real actor" to never dip below a 30% rating.  "Real actor" means we're excluding David Beckham and Adam Levine from this list.

Hugh Jackman  2008

For 2009, see: Johnny Depp

Ryan Reynolds  2010

Reynold's late success stems from a few super hero roles and animated movies.  Whatever works.

Bradley Cooper  2011

Channing Tatum  2012

Tatum's high ratings stem from the Magic Mike empire and some animated films.  See: Ryan Reynolds

Adam Levine  2013

Arguably not an actor.  See: Matt Damon.

Chris Hemsworth  2014

Even though Hemsworth started his career not even a decade ago, he's starred in a few box office hits. His drop in ratings tells us he should stick to super hero movies.

David Beckham  2015

Arguably not an actor.  See: Matt Damon.

Dwayne Johnson  2016

Perhaps not a fair fight, as "The Rock" just received his award less than a year ago, but we've seen a slow climb in ratings for the former wrestler since his role as Scorpion King.
